Rudy Reyes
Have you ever wondered why two different people, growing up in the same set of life circumstances: environments, educations, family situations, etc. can end up living drastically different quality of lives as adults?
I read an amazing book entitled Hero Living written by a man named Rudy Reyes. A portion of the book describes his own childhood wherein his parents divorced when he was a young child which left him and his sibling brothers in the hands of foster parents. He somehow took custody of his brothers and raised them by himself. He spoke about how his purpose in life at that time was to see to the needs of his younger brothers because they meant everything to him. He became a state champion high school wrestler, learned martial arts from a Kung Fu master and later was accepted in to the elite Special Forces unit of the Marine Corps called Force Recon. He recounted some of his hardships he faced as soldier. Jumping out of a helicopter into open water and swimming 10 kilometers in a heavy backpack to reach shore. During the day he would hide in holes for long periods of time and in extreme heat conditions, and then he would emerge out into the darkness and patrol through the night. Rudy went on to serve three combat tours of duty with the Marines and then resumed a civilian life as a highly sought physical trainer, public speaker, actor, and military advisor. Having learned this much about Mr. Reyes, I consider him to be the epitome of an achiever as well as a survivor both qualities I hold in the highest regard.
Here is a guy who had all of the cards stacked against him even from the time of a little child. Everything in his life from the start should have doomed him to a life of failure, disappointment, sadness and defeat. But instead, the accomplishments of that same man indicate a different outcome.
The reality is that each one of us has the ability to react to outside stimuli any way that we choose. You have read and heard of countless examples of people who come from the finest backgrounds of privilege and opportunity, and who lose it all because of the bad decisions that they make in life. And you know of others, similar to this fine man who I am referring to in this article, who take every excuse for failure and turn it into gold. I can only imagine the bond of brotherhood that this man must have with his younger brothers who he singlehandedly raised while he too was only a child. Rudy Reyes is living proof that the difference between the winner and the loser is how a person chooses to react to their circumstances.
